Now that you have lost that deadly attitude, lets address another common phrase, “Accidents Happen.” Yes, they certainly do! Gun accidents involving children happen a lot. Gun accidents do not discriminate against age, gender, economic class, or even experience. They happen to children as well as adults, males and females, in the ghetto and in the most prestigious areas, and they occur among both the amateurs and the experienced. We can have the best of intentions, but our back up plan cannot be based on the assumption that our kids will not make a greater mistake than ours.
Good intentions mean nothing when your child dies from an accident as a result of a mistake you made. So – Safety First!
There are tons of gun safety protocol out there. I am not an instructor, but I do want to address the three main mistakes I see parents making.
- Store your gun properly!!! A purse, dresser drawer, closet, & vehicle are NOT “safe” or secure locations to store a gun – EVER! Don’t hide your guns – LOCK them up! I don’t care what kind of purse you have, or how tall your dresser is or how hidden you think it is in your closet, or how you lock your car or glove box. NONE of these places are safe places. None of them are gun safes. If your kids find them – THEY WILL PLAY WITH THEM!!
- The ONLY time a gun should be loaded is if you are physically wearing it. My husband was a police officer for 16 years. Living the law enforcement life for so long you worry that an unloaded gun is useless. Maybe, but the responsibility is on you & I would rather take the 2 seconds to load the gun than I would my child to take the 2 seconds to pull the trigger.
- Know which of your friends are gun owners & never assume the ones who are practice the same gun safety rules you do. Be proactive – ask anyone whose home your child visits if there are loaded guns in the house or vehicles and how they are stored.
Accidents happen, but these accidents can be prevent. Our son’s accident was a result of our negligence & we take full responsibility for the mistakes we made. I would give anything to go back & unload that gun. I would give anything to go back & physically wear that gun rather than have it on a nightstand – waiting to be put in my purse. I would give anything to know what I know now. I can’t go back and I will never “get over it” – But every step I take forward I will gladly share our mistakes to keep others from making them. Accidents do happen! They can happen to anyone. Trust me, you don’t want to find your child holding that loaded gun you thought was in your purse. You don’t want to catch your child reaching into that drawer it is in looking for their iPod. You don’t want to hear a gun go off from your closet. And you don’t want to find your child dead in your car. These are all accidents that are hard to read about & harder to imagine, but friends, they are nearly impossible to live through. Safety First!
